General Questions
Who are the classes for?
Our classes are designed for adults and older teens who want to learn to sew, improve their skills, or complete a specific project. We welcome garment sewists, quilters, bag makers, and curious beginners.
Are complete beginners welcome?
Yes. Many classes are beginner-friendly. Look for “Beginner” or “Confident Beginner” in the class description if you’re new or returning after a long break.
How do I know which skill level to choose?
Each class lists a suggested skill level. If you can thread a machine and sew a straight seam, you’re usually a Confident Beginner. If you’re unsure, you can contact us with a short note about your experience and we’ll recommend a good fit.
How large are the classes?
Class sizes are kept small so you receive individual support. Typical group sizes range from about 4–10 students, depending on the project and venue.
Can I book a private lesson?
Yes. Private sewing lessons are available for focused help with your machine, a pattern, fitting, or a specific project. Visit the Private Lessons page or use the inquiry form to request a session.
Can I arrange a group workshop?
Yes. Custom group workshops may be available for friends, community groups, retreats, clubs, or workplace events. Visit the Private Group Sewing Workshops page to send an inquiry.
Do you offer online classes?
Yes. Online options can be made available. Check the Classes & Workshops page or class descriptions to see if a particular session is offered online, and send an inquiry if there is something special you are looking for.
Do you repair sewing machines or provide alterations?
No. Manitoulin Threads focuses on sewing education and workshops. We don’t currently offer machine repair or alteration services, but can offer a class to assist you in developing these skills such as zipper and button repairs, hemming and basic fitting.

Where can I buy all the awesome fabrics and sewing things?
I love to support local and Canadian. Follow me on Instagram or Facebook for my posts about local sources. I will make some fabric kits available for specialty classes, and support you in choosing (and finding) amazing textiles for your projects. Want to meet up at a fabric shop or online shopping help? This is DEFINITELY an area of specialty for me and I can source nearly anything you can think of! Please feel free to reach out for support!
Cancellation Policy
Can I transfer my registration to someone else?
In many cases, yes—as long as you let us know before the class and the new participant meets the skill level and age requirements. Details will be included in your confirmation information.
What is the cancellation policy?
Most classes require advance registration and have a set cancellation window. Cancellations made before that window may be eligible for a class credit; late cancellations are usually non-refundable unless you can find someone to fill your spot. Private or semi-private lessons can be re-booked with 48 hours notice.
What happens if a class is cancelled?
If a class needs to be cancelled or rescheduled (for example, due to low enrollment, weather, or instructor illness), you’ll be contacted by email. You’ll be offered a transfer to another date, a credit, or a refund according to the policy for that event.
Materials & Supplies
Are sewing machines supplied?
Some classes include machine rental options and some are bring-your-own. Each class description will clearly state whether machines are available
Can I bring my own machine?
In most cases, yes—as long as your machine is in good working order and you bring the manual and basic accessories. Check the class description for details or ask before registering.
What fabrics and materials are included?
Materials vary by class. Some workshops include a full kit; others provide only shared tools and equipment. Each listing will explain exactly what’s included. Usually, participants are encouraged to choose and bring their own fabrics - that way you are sewing with something you love!
Will I receive a supply list?
Yes. If materials are not fully included, you’ll receive a supply list after registering or find it in the class description so you can prepare in advance.
Where are classes held?
Classes are usually held in rented community venues in Greater Sudbury and on Manitoulin Island. The exact location for each class is listed in the description and in your confirmation email. I may also be available to travel to your location and venue.
Are venues accessible?
Many of our venues are accessible or have minimal stairs, but accessibility can vary by location. Accessibility details will be noted in the class description where possible. If you have specific needs, please contact us before registering so we can advise on the best option.
